KEOKUK (AP)--Authorities say an 83-year-old woman has died of injuries suffered in an apartment fire in Keokuk.
Firefighters responded to a fire alarm at the Mississippi Valley Terrace apartments around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Fire officials say they found Nelda Barbee lying on a walkway outside an apartment filled with flames and smoke.
Authorities say neighbors found Barbee in the doorway of the apartment and pulled her away.
Fire officials say Barbee was taken to a Keokuk hospital, and transferred to University Hospitals in Iowa City, where she died early Sunday.
Assistant Fire Chief Mike Maerz says about 10 other apartments had smoke or water damage.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
