Obama targets greenhouse gases, fuel efficiency

WASHINGTON (KWWL) - President Barack Obama is taking steps aimed at making the country more energy independent and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

He's directed the Environmental Protection Agency to re-examine whether California and other states should be allowed to set auto emission standards that are tougher than those set by the federal government.

At his first formal event in the White House East Room, Obama also talked of reversing the nation's dependence on foreign oil and "building a new energy economy that will create millions of jobs." To that end, he's directing his administration to come up with new auto fuel-efficiency guidelines in time to cover 2011 model-year cars.

Auto industry officials have complained tougher standards would mean billions of dollars in new costs.
