DES MOINES, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team surrendered a 13-0 run to Drake in the first half and was never able to recover in a 70-60 loss to the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon in the Knapp Center.
Kim Wypiszynski led UNI (6-11, 4-3) with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Nicole Clausen added 10 points for the Panthers.
Drake (12-7, 6-2) had five players reach double figures, led by 18 points from Jordann Plummer.
With Drake leading 14-9, Kim Wypiszynski scored on three straight trips for the Panthers to bring the score to 17-15 in favor of the Bulldogs with 9:31 remaining in the first half.
Nicole Clausen answered a pair of free throws from Brittnye McSparron with a layup at the other end to keep the Panther deficit at two. On UNI's next possession, Wypiszynski scored in the paint to tie the game at 19-19 with 6:52 left in the half.
Rachel Hackbarth scored in the paint to return the lead to Drake, 21-19.
Drake scored three points from the free-throw line, and Hackbarth scored on a putback. McSparron, Hackbarth and Jordann Plummer scored on consecutive possessions to cap a 13-0 run that gave the Bulldogs a 31-19 lead with 1:13 on the clock.
Lizzie Boeck hit a three to end the Drake run, but Lauren Dybing scored at the other end to send the Bulldogs into the break with a 34-12 lead.
The teams traded baskets on the first two possessions of the second half, and at 16:59 Monique Jones scored as she was fouled. The free throw put Drake in front, 41-26.
Wypiszynski matched the three-point play at the other end to bring the Panther deficit back to 12, 41-29.
After a free-throw from Kaniesha Agee put Drake in front by 13, Clausen hit a three from the top of the key to pull UNI within 10, 42-32 with
14:22 to play.
McSparron answered with a three from the left wing, but Katelin Oney drained a three on the Panthers' ensuing possession to keep the UNI deficit at 10, 45-35.
Plummer scored on a layup, but Oney drained her second three of the game to cut the Drake advantage to single digits, 47-38 with 11:56 to play.
Kristin Turk hit a three and then a pair of free throws to extend Drake's lead to 52-38.
Trailing 54-40, Boeck made a pair of free throws and scored in the paint to pull UNI back within 10, 54-44.
A trio of free throws from Plummer extended Drake's lead to 13.
Armstrong hit a three and then took a charge at the defensive end. She drew a foul on the other end, and the freshman converted both free throws to pull UNI within eight, 59-51 with 4:28 remaining.
Drake scored the next three points to take a 62-51 lead, but a three from Indy Uhlenhopp brought UNI back within eight, 62-54. After a free throw from Jones gave Drake a nine-point lead, Erin Brocka converted a pair of free throws to cut the Drake lead to seven, 63-56 with 2:19 left.
Brocka answered a pair of Plummer free throws with a mid-range jumper at
1:26 to keep the Drake lead at seven. The Panthers were unable to pull any closer, however, as the Bulldogs made five of six free throws to extend its advantage to 70-58.
Wypiszynski scored with 15 seconds left to bring the final score to 70-60.
UNI shot 22-of-53 (41.5 percent) from the floor, including 6-of-16 (37.5
percent) from three-point range. The Panthers were 10-of-11 (90.0
percent) from the free-throw line.
Drake shot 52.3 percent (23-of-44) from the floor, including a 14-of-22
(63.6 percent) performance in the first half. The Bulldogs were 3-of-7
(42.9 percent) from behind the arc and 21-of-31 (67.7 percent) from the free-throw line.
Drake held a 37-22 advantage on the boards. The Bulldogs were able to turn 17 offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points.
The Panthers return to action on Friday when they host Indiana State at 7:30 p.m. in the McLeod Center.
