Fire damages Cedar Rapids house

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Firefighters in Cedar Rapids had their hands full with a house fire around midday Saturday.  The fire broke out around Noon on 8th St. SE.

Crews cut holes in the roof and walls to prevent the spread of flames.  Fire severely damaged the house.  Crews had to battle temperatures around zero degrees at the time.  They say it did not affect any equipment.

Firefighters say the fire spread so quickly because it was an older home

"There really isn't a lot of resistance when the fire gets into the walls it can basically go from the basement all the way to the roof and the ceiling and spread across the ceiling quickly," said firefighter Greg Buelow.

There was nobody home when it started.  It's not clear what started the fire.  The Red Cross is helping the two adults who lived there.
