Report: Crime is down in Waterloo

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- In 2008, the total number of offenses are down. Police Chief Tom Jennings says more officers are out on the streets and they are making a difference.

In 2008, the total numbers of offenses are down by almost 7%. Homicides were also down more than 33%.  In 2007 there three homicides and in 2008 there were two. Aggravated assaults were up more than 18%. Burglaries were down 15.5%.

Armed robbery increased by more than 50%, with 73 cases in 2007 to 113 in 2008.   

"We have extra officers out patrolling the areas, but we have a large area to cover. Obviously where we are at, the robbers are watching us as closely as we are watching them," Waterloo Police Chief Tom Jennings said.

The number of calls for service was also up in 2008, with more than 76,000 calls, compared to around 73,500 calls in 2007.
