Senate panel proposes $300 bonus for seniors

WASHINGTON (KWWL) - Senior citizens receiving Social Security would get a bonus payment of $300 under a plan released by a top Senate Democrat.

Veterans who get disability payments would also get the $300 under the proposal released Friday by Montana Democrat Max Baucus.

The bonus for seniors is but one chapter in the Finance Committee chairman's $355 billion proposal, which is a version of the stimulus plan sought by President Barack Obama. It faces a committee vote next week.

There's also a $500 tax cut for most workers, help to pay for college, tax cuts for businesses and to promote renewable energy, and $87 billion to help states struggling with their budgets for the Medicaid health care program for the poor and disabled.

Obama wants the bill on his desk by the middle of next month.
