Iowa DOT outlines stimulus projects

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The Iowa Department of Transportation says it has discovered $257 million in road construction projects that may be immediately eligible for federal money.

The funds could fall under a congressional proposal for a federal economic stimulus package.

The projects are all on Iowa's primary highway system. They would focus almost exclusively on replacing aging bridge decks and resurfacing roads.

Scott Newhard, the vice president of public affairs for the Associated General Contractors of Iowa, says the stimulus package has the potential of saving thousands of construction jobs in Iowa.
