Hamby guilty of murder

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- A Bremer County jury found Lawrence Hamby of Sumner guilty of first degree murder Thursday afternoon.

The 27 year-old Hamby was charged with killing 52 year-old Paul McKinney in 2006.  McKinney was found beaten and strangled to death in his Sumner home.  The jury wasted no time, returning a guilty verdict in just a few hours.

The defense rested its case earlier in the day.  Hamby's attorney's argued someone else killed McKinney.  Their case focused of disputing DNA evidence found at the scene.

McKinney's son, Nathan, is charged with tampering and lying to investigators.  Prosecutors say he initially blamed two unknown men with assaulting his father.  He later changed his story and testified at trial against Hamby.
