Iowa City submits $11.6 million buyout proposal to FEMA

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Iowa City has submitted a nearly $11.6 million application to federal officials to buyout 40 flood-damaged properties.

The application includes 39 homes and one vacant lot in the Parkview Terrace neighborhood, which is located in the 100-year flood plain along the Iowa River. The neighborhood suffered extensive damage in last summer's flooding.

Officials say other properties qualified for the voluntary Hazard Mitigation Grant Program but owners decided not to participate.

Properties that are bought under the program may not be built on or developed again and must be converted to open space.

City officials say the program is designed to reduce the risk of future flood damage.

If approved, the money would be combined with state economic development funds to buy the properties.
