CR police arrest three in string of BB gun vandalism

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A Cedar Rapids man who had enough of BB gun vandals used a video camera to catch the suspected crooks.

Cedar Rapids police arrested three men Wednesday night who they believe are responsible for at least 10 vandalism cases.

On Monday, police say someone shot out the window of a sliding glass door at Ronald Coffins' home on B Ave NE.  At that time, Coffin installed a video camera pointing to the street in case the culprits returned. And they did.

Wednesday night, police said Coffin was sitting in his house around 9:25 p.m. when he heard someone shooting at his window again.   A news release says Coffin saw a red vehicle leaving his area. He ran out of his house and started following this vehicle. The vehicle stopped just down the street from Coffin's home.  Police say Coffin told the teens to stay there because he had called the police. Surprisingly, the four subjects in the vehicle did stay until police arrived.

The Patrol Division and the Mobile Assist Team (MAT) had been trying to locate these subjects for some time. Patrol Officers arrived and spoke to Coffin and the individuals in the red Chevy Impala. Officers found an air-soft gun in the vehicle along with several BB pellets and air-soft pellets on the rear floor board of the Impala. Police say they also found a BB gun rifle in the vehcile's trunk along with a bag that had wrist rocket sling shots.

Police arrested Nathan Hall, 18,  Austin Ingram, 18 and Matthew Clark,18.  A fourth subject was in the vehicle but was not charged.  All of the men are from Cedar Rapids.

All three admitted to 10 separate BB gun capers over the past few months. This bumps their crime up to second-degree Criminal Mischief.  The 10 cases that Hall, Ingram and Clark were charged with are:

  1. Jung's, 1510 Mt Vernon Rd SE, 1/19/09
  2. AEC Construction 1/19/09, 1401 Mt Vernon Rd SE
