Mason City approves 62 properties for buyouts

MASON CITY (AP)--The Mason City city council has pushed through the final buyout step for 62 flood-damaged properties.

The council on Tuesday approved the applications and rejected four others. The total cost of the buyout is about $6 million. The city will pick up about $970,000 of that total.

More than 70 buyout properties remain, which the city will consider on Jan. 27.

Federal officials still need to approve the buyouts, which were officially hazard mitigation grants.

Flood plain administrator Tricia Sandahl says bought-out properties cannot be built on again.

Among the properties rejected for flood buyouts was a warehouse that council members felt was dilapidated before the floods.
