Machine converts garbage into energy in CR

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- There's a new tool to reduce the amount of garbage in Iowa landfills.

It's called a plasma-enhanced melter, and was shown off in Cedar Rapids Wednesday.

Solid waste goes in, and is broken down into a recyclable solid and a gas that can be turned into energy.

The Linn County Solid Waste Agency is looking into the technology to offset the 600 tons of flood debris it takes in per day.
