Iowa Republicans call for more budget scrutiny

DES MOINES (KWWL) - Republicans are complaining about how Democrats are overseeing the state budget, but Democrats are expressing puzzlement since they haven't received a spending plan from the governor.

House Minority Leader Kraig Paulsen of Hiawatha said Democrats are limiting committees that scrutinize the budget. He called Wednesday for greater transparency in the budget process.

Democrats say they haven't begun budget meetings since they don't have a proposal from Gov. Chet Culver.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of Des Moines acknowledges that Democrats won't hold some hearings, but that's because state agencies typically seek more spending at those meetings.

Since no money is available for new programs, he says the hearings aren't needed.
