Iowa lawmakers consider lowering boating alcohol limits

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Iowa lawmakers once again want to cut alcohol limits for boaters.

The Senate Natural Resources Committee approved the bill on Tuesday which would lower the blood-alcohol limit from .10 to .08, which is the limit for drivers on the road.

The House and Senate have both passed versions of the bill during the past two years, but lawmakers disagreed on various points, such as who is considered a boat "operator."

Supporters says the change is necessary to help save lives.

The proposal gained momentum after a Perry dentist was killed in an accident caused by a drunken boater on West Lake Okoboji in northern Iowa in 2005.
