Clipper Windpower laying off employees

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - KWWL has confirmed that 90 employees worldwide had been laid off from Clipper Windpower.

Mary McCann-Gates, Director of Global Communications for Clipper Windpower, Inc. could not say how many of those employees were working at the Cedar Rapids location, but did say a "good number" would lose their jobs at the Cedar Rapids facility.

She confirmed globally 90 of the 830 employees will be let go based on the state of the economy.

In spite of the layoffs, C.E.O Doug Pertz is optimistic that President Obama, who has pledged to create green jobs in the U.S., will turn the economy around.

"We're very encouraged about the future," said Pertz. "We think we'll end up seeing this come back to very strong growth in the latter part of '09 and '10, and we're dedicated to putting back that employment and a heck of a lot more in Cedar Rapids and in Iowa."

We will continue to update this developing story during our evening newscasts and online at kwwl.com
