Pork producers sue EPA over animal emissions

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The National Pork Producers Council says it has filed a federal lawsuit challenging the Environmental Protection Agency's requirement that livestock farms inform communities about estimated emissions.

The rule, which is scheduled to take effect on Tuesday, was adopted last month.

It requires livestock producers to call state and local emergency response authorities to inform them of estimated emissions, then file a written notification of those estimates.

If farms fail to comply, they face penalties of up to $25,000 per day.

The NPPC says the lawsuit was filed through an after hours system in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

A telephone message left at the EPA's press office wasn't immediately returned on Monday, a federal holiday.
