Former legislative leader loses fight with cancer

CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) -- A former state lawmaker who held key roles in both chambers of the Legislature has died after a battle with cancer.

Mary Lundby died just before 9:30 Saturday morning. The Marion Republican had been hospitalized in Cedar Rapids. She was 60.

Lundby retired from the Senate in 2008 after 22 years in the Legislature. She was planning a run for a seat on the Linn County Board of Supervisors when she announced that her cancer had returned and she would not make the race.

Lundby served four terms in the Iowa House and was the first ever woman elected as Speaker Pro-Tem.

She went on to serve in the Iowa Senate in 1995 and served as Republican leader.
