Family members of fatal fire survivors speak out

A prayer service is set for Sunday to remember four children killed by fire in Greeley earlier this week.  The fire destroyed the Hansen home Wednesday morning killing 14-year-old Abigail Zeil, 8-year-old Tyler Hansen, 7-year-old Megan Hansen and 3-year-old Haylee Hansen.  The Greeley Community Church will hold a prayer service from 12-4pm Sunday for everyone affected.  Another family was staying at the home when the fire started but made it out safely.  It's been an emotional last few days for the two families affected by Wednesday's fire as well as friends, classmates, firefighters and others in Delaware County.  Family members of a mother and her five children say they were staying at the home thanks to the generosity of the Hansen family.

Carrigan, Bethany, and Alan Long.  The three children and an older brother made it out of the house alive Wednesday morning.   They and an older brother will live the rest of their lives knowing four kids around their age died in that fire.  Jessica Cole is their cousin.

"They were all our friends. They were all helping each other out because they moved out of Waterloo a few months ago. They moved out there for a new environment for the kids and everything," said Cole.

Jessica's aunt, Nancy Long, was the person who ran to a neighbor's house to dial 911.  They say she tried to rescue everyone.

"They were great people, very generous, a big heart of gold, to help anybody out he could take them in, give them a place to live, not to be in the streets, help them out any way he could," said the children's aunt, Karen Cole.

The state fire marshal's office is still looking for the cause.  Meantime, it's a tragedy that's affected two families directly and many more indirectly.

"Our thoughts and prayers do go out to the other family. It's devastating to lose one child, let alone four children," said Karen Cole.

The Red Cross is helping the Long family.  Funeral services have not been set for the Hansen children.  A memorial fund has been set up at Dupaco Community Credit Union.  Donations for both families can be made to the Eagles Lodge in Manchester.
