Groups: Feds expanding peanut butter probe

WASHINGTON (KWWL) - Consumer groups say the government is expanding its investigation of peanut products in a salmonella outbreak that has sickened hundreds and killed at least five.

They said Friday the Food and Drug Administration is notifying some 30 companies that bought peanut butter or peanut paste from a Georgia facility to test their products.

Iowa was one of the states that reported a person sickened by the salmonella outbreak.

The representatives of two consumer groups say they participated in a teleconference with government officials who said the companies are also being asked to consider halting sales.

Peanut paste can be used in dozens of products, from baked goods to cooking sauces.

Tests at the Georgia facility owned by Peanut Corp. of America have shown signs of contamination, but no definitive link has been made to salmonella.
