UPDATE: Power restored in Benton and Linn Counties

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Power is back on in Benton and Linn Counties after more than 15,000 customers were without power.

The power outage affected the Cedar Rapids City Hall and 9 other city departments on Friday afternoon.

This was the second power outage on Friday.

Alliant Energy says an equipment failure at a substation caused a power outage in downtown Cedar Rapids Friday morning.

Spokesman Ryan Stensland says the outage occurred about 7:15 a.m. on Friday when a circuit switch failed at a substation.

Stensland says the substation was damaged by last summer's flooding, and officials believe that disaster and this week's record cold were factors in the circuit failing.

The outage affected several hundred customers, including Mercy Medical Center and St. Luke's Hospital. Both hospitals used backup generators.

Stensland says the power was restored about 8:30 a.m., but St. Luke's remained on a backup generator after a problem with some underground cables, which was being repaired.
