Superintendent Markward Addresses Make-Up Days

Overnight Thursday morning, Cedar Rapids experienced an all-time record low temperature of minus-29 degrees. That broken the previous record low of minus-28. Cedar Rapids Schools had to cancel class again.

In an e-mail to his District staff and in response to media questions about possible school make-up days, Cedar Rapids Schools Superintendent, Dr. David Markward, addressed the issue with this statement late Thursday afternoon.

Friday, January 16, will mark the fifth day that the District has cancelled classes due to hazardous weather and/or road conditions.  Not surprisingly, we have received questions and comments from staff and parents about making up the missed days. Some have suggested that the District use scheduled spring break days as make-ups.

Every year, the District Calendar Committee (made up of staff and parents) considers possibilities of days to use as potential make-up dates. The school community (staff, students, parents, others) is then invited to comment on the calendar draft. With each survey, the majority of respondents has indicated a strong preference to maintain a full week of spring break.  We would be very hesitant to use those days this year because they were not established as potential make-up days, and this would go against the preference of the majority of respondents.

If the winter weather continues to create hazardous conditions, we will search for additional make-up options for the current school year, recognizing that State Code requirements are very specific about what is allowable. I encourage you to submit your ideas for future school calendars, especially as they relate to make-up days. At this point, and until further notice, the established make-up date schedule should be considered confirmed.
