Pretrial for Iowa City chess game murder

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The pretrial for an Iowa City man accused of killing a neighbor over a game of chess is expected to begin Thursday.

29-year old David Christian is charged with second degree murder in the death of 39-year old Michael Steward last October.

A criminal complaint against Christian says Steward slapped him during a chess game.  It says Christian, in response, held Steward's hands together while applying pressure to his neck until he was unresponsive.

Christian pleaded not guilty in November.  The trial is set for January 26th.
