Gannett newspaper workers in Iowa City must take unpaid time off

Posted:

DES MOINES (KWWL) - The Gannett Company said it is requiring about 800 full and part-time employees at The Des Moines Register, Iowa City Press-Citizen and the Register's weekly papers to take a week off without pay.

Gannett, the nation's largest newspaper company, announced the plan Wednesday for all its employees, saying the furloughs must occur in the first quarter.

This comes one month after the Iowa City Press-Citizen laid off 11 employees.

Laura Hollingsworth, president and publisher of the Register, says the furlough will allow Gannett to avoid layoffs while assessing economic trends.

Union-representative workers are not affected, but the company will ask the union to accept the furloughs.
