Reinventing the family meal

Dubuque (KWWL) - In Dubuque County, a consortium of community partners including the Visiting Nurse Association, the Board of Health and HyVee stores are working to revive the family meal as well as encourage healthy eating habits. Participants will learn how to cook more economically at home rather than eating fast food. They also will be promoting healthy eating for their children. The long-term goal is to influence family behavior so they eat more frequently at home and realize the benefits of eating healthier foods. The family will realize the relationship-building benefits of regular shared meals.

At each class, participants will actually prepare a meal, consume the finished product and take home a kit with ingredients to prepare the meal at home for their family.

Classes are three weekly sessions (one session each week). The cost of the series of classes is $15, but has a value of $75 when including the cost of the demonstration meal and the meal kit for each class. All three classes must be attended. Participants will also receive a cookbook called Healthy Meals in a Hurry, a meat thermometer and HyVee coupons.
