Report: Homelessness down in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- According to a new report, the number of Iowans who were homeless on a given night in January dropped 66 percent between 2005 and 2007.

The report, from the Washington, D.C.-based National Alliance to End Homelessness, warns, however, that the nation's economic recession could reverse the trend.

Iowa along with Idaho, Kansas, South Dakota and New Mexico saw the largest drops in homelessness during the group's two year study. Kentucky reported the highest increase at over 60-percent.

The group estimates 2,734 people across Iowa were homeless during the point-in-time study in January 2007, down from 8,130 in 2005.
