More blood donors needed

WATERLOO (KWWL) January is National Blood Donor month and The Blood Center of Iowa on Kimball Avenue in Waterloo hopes people decide to make a resolution in 2009 to become regular blood donors.

Winter months are particularly slow for blood centers. Weather also creates obstacles by forcing blood drives to be cancelled.

Pam Wolter with The Blood Center said only 5-percent of people are blood donors. The Blood Center of Iowa needs 2000 pints of blood each week to be able to operate.

"Right now we need 'A' negative and 'O' negative blood types. We currently have less than three days supply for the 49 hospitals we serve including the three hospitals in Black Hawk County," said Pam Wolter.

A blood drive cancelled Monday because of winter weather is re-scheduled for Friday. The Sumner Community Blood Drive is from 12:30 to 6 p.m. at the Legion Hall. Walk-ins are welcome.
