The Cedar Valley Go 5210! Fit Families Alliance, a team of agencies and entities addressing the growing local problem of childhood obesity, held its launch event on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at Crossroads Mall in Waterloo. The event featured wellness information booths from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and a formal launch program at 1:30 p.m. Program speakers addressed the childhood obesity statistics in the Cedar Valley and 5210 Alliance organizations were introduced. KWWL TV News Anchor/Reporter Tara Thomas was one of the speakers for the event. The program included the unveiling of the new Go 5210 logo design and website. Last fall the Cedar Valley Go 5210 Fit Families Alliance sponsored a logo design competition with area high school art students mentored by area graphic designers. All student participants, including finalists, will be recognized and the winning logo will be presented. The website, designed by a University of Northern Iowa student, will also be displayed. All the logo entries will be on display at Crossroads Mall until January 25. Go 5210! is an alliance dedicated to improving the wellness of tomorrow's families today through healthy habits and lifestyles. The numerals 5210 represent the daily guidelines that the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend to help reduce obesity in youth: 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, 2 hours maximum of screen time outside of school hours, 1 hour of exercise and 0 beverages with sugar.
