As snowfall ends, Iowa City braces for blizzard conditions

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - You could say it's the calm after the storm...before another one. The snow stopped falling in iowa city around 3:00 Monday afternoon. But the bigger concern is about what's to come. Strong winds are expected to pick up as we move into the evening hours creating near whiteout conditions on the roads.

As of 5:00 pm Monday, traffic on Interstate 80 around the Iowa City area is moving fairly smoothly in both directions. One car went into the ditch near the Dodge Street exit going westbound on 80 shortly after 3:00 Monday afternoon. That was just as the snow was tapering off.

Another car went into the median near the Walmart on Highway One. Several Walmart employees got off work early so they could get home before the roads got much worse. Connie Blankenship lives in Kalona. Walmart let her leave an hour early so she could get a head start on her drive home.

"I'm very nervous when it comes to traveling in this stuff so I just take it slow and hope for the best. Got my cell phone charged up and gonna see how it goes," said Blankenship.

As of 5:00 pm, the side streets seemed to be faring worse than the interstate. Cars on Governor Street were getting stuck trying to get up the hill going towards 80. With winds expected to pick up in the next few hours, travel will become difficult if not impossible overnight.
