Polk County school district considers 4-day weeks

BONDURANT (AP) - A central Iowa school district may become the state's first to opt for four-day school weeks to save money.

Officials with the Bondurant-Farrar schools say adding about an hour to each day and cutting back to four days would help cover a $1.3 million deficit blamed on overspending an a bookkeeping error. Some of Iowa's 362 districts have considered such a move, but the Polk County district would be the first.

Some parents remain skeptical, noting that four-day weeks could raise child care costs.

Superintendent Peggy Vint says school officials plan two forums later this month and say they won't make the switch without public support. The school board could vote on the plan by March.
