Knights finish 2nd at Duals

CEDAR FALLS - Upping their overall dual win streak to 38 and Iowa Conference dual win string to 124, top-ranked Wartburg raced into the semifinals of the 2009 National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III National Duals Saturday, Jan. 10.

The Knights, improving to 7-0, blanked Wabash College of Indiana 46-0 in the first round and then upended league rival Luther 39-3 in the quarterfinals. The two victories set up a semifinal-round clash with fourth-seeded Coe Sunday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m.

Individually, senior 149-pounder Jacob Naig of Emmetsburg and senior 157-pounder Aaron Wernimont of Pocahontas each kept their personal win skeins intact as well. Naig pinned Wabash's Jared Tribbett in 4:41 and then defeated Luther's Jason Pyle 19-6 to increase his string to 46. Wernimont took a pin in the Norse dual to move to 63 consecutive wins. Senior 184-pounder Romeo Djoumessi of Waverly also highlighted the win over Luther, taking a pin in his first match of the season.

The winner of Sunday's semifinal between the Knights and Kohawks faces either Delaware Valley or Augsburg in the championship dual at 3 p.m. The two losing squads meet up in the third-place match at 1 p.m.
