Effort underway to replace fallen bridge

CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) -- Officials with the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railroad Company have begun preparations to replace a railroad bridge that was lost during summer flooding.

The 105-year-old railroad bridge, which crossed the Cedar River and linked to Cedar Rapids' downtown, collapsed despite efforts to save it during the June flooding.

The bridge will be at the same location, between the 8th and 12th Avenue bridges.

Officials say the new bridge will look different and be better equipped to withstand flood waters.
