Update: No horses tested positive so far in C.E.M. outbreak

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- After battling the rough economy, a flood, and a tornado this past year, one Iowa horse breeder is waiting to see if a breeding mixup may have left some horses temporarily infertile.

Last year, some horses at a U.S.D.A. certified breeder in Kentucky were found to have contagious equine metritis, or C.E.M.

The infection can be transmitted during breeding when the equipment is not completely sterilized.  Routine testing caught the infection.

Six horses in Iowa are possibly infected and three of them are at Beaulahland Paint and Quarter Horses in Cedar Falls.  C.E.M. is curable though treatment but isn't cheap.

Results of the bacteria cultures should be back next month.  Right now, no Iowa horses have tested positive.
