Local groups protest Middle East violence

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - An escalation of fighting between Israel and Hamas brings with it an increase in demonstrations - on both sides - including here in eastern Iowa.

In Iowa City, "People for Justice in Palestine" gathered downtown to hold a peace vigil to end the fighting.

It's the second straight week the group has held a demonstration.

An Israeli supporter stood across the street holding a sign.

Both sides want their voices heard.

"Our hope is to educate the people here that this is not about only the israeli security but it's about the palestinian freedom," said organizer Yaser Abudagga.

"There have been so many other protests around the country, a good many of them turning violent, and I just wanted to be at least a lone voice in the wilderness," said Israel supporter Jim Carroll.

Other rallies were held around the country Saturday.
