Mercy Medical Center cutting costs

DES MOINES (AP) -- The state's largest healthcare provider isn't immune from the economic downturn.

This week, Mercy Medical Center asked employees to make concessions and says that it is working to reduce its staff and costs.

Some options including allowing qualified employees to take a voluntary status reductions. That means full time employees would be changed to part time for nine months.

Another option is offering voluntary resignations with benefits. Employees can take two weeks base pay and receive one week base pay per each year of service.

Mercy spokesman Gregg Leggen says none of these options is mandated at this point.

Mercy's network consists of twelve medical centers, 26 affiliated hospitals and more than 100 clinics across Iowa.
