Iowa lawmakers prepare for challenging session

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The economy is just one of the issues state lawmakers will look at when the Iowa Legislature convenes on Monday.

The 2009 Legislature will face tough issues on the economy and budget, including possible tax increases. Lawmakers will also look at paying to fix Iowa's roadways, promoting renewable energy, and reviewing the state's smoking ban and sex offender laws.

This session includes 18 first-time lawmakers. One of them is Democrat Kerry Burt of Waterloo. He says he's just excited to get to work on Monday.

"What I'm looking at is sort of the nuts and bolts of what happens, what really goes on sort of the jockeying of position maybe with some of the new people and those that have been around for a while and as those things work through I'll see where I fit in," said Burt.
