Witness in Hamby murder trial charged

WAVERLY, Iowa (AP) -- Authorities have charged a northeast Iowa man with obstruction of prosecution, saying he failed to cooperate with an investigation into his father's death.

Police charged Nathan McKinney on Friday, two days after he testified in the first degree-murder trial of 27-year-old Lawrence Hamby, of Sumner.

Hamby is accused of beating and strangling Nathan McKinney's father, 52-year-old Paul "Frank" McKinney, who was found dead in his Sumner home on Jan. 18, 2006.

Nathan McKinney testified on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Bremer County Attorney Kasey Wadding says he waited until after McKinney finished testifying because he was worried that McKinney could flee the state before the trial. McKinney has said he lived at a variety of addresses in northeastern Iowa.

Obstruction is an aggrivated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison.
