Danish firm delays Cedar Rapids plant

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- A Danish manufacturer says it is postponing plans to build a factory in Cedar Rapids for at least a year.

Hamlet Protein A/S of Horsens, Denmark manufactures soy protein supplements for animal feed. The Cedar Rapids factory is to be its first in the United States.

The company announced its decision on Friday, citing a recent decline in trans-Atlantic shipping rates, the strengthening U.S. dollar and lower commodity prices as factors in the decision.

Halmet CEO Soren Munch says the company remains committed to Cedar Rapids. He says the company has already invested a considerable amount of money in the project.

Hamlet announced plans in December 2007 for a $20 million manufacturing facility off 50th Ave. The plant will employ 20-30 people at wages of $19 to $20 per hour.
