Dozens of north Iowans face layoffs at Eaton Corp

BELMOND (KWWL) -- The worsening economy is forcing layoffs at the end of the month at the Eaton Corporation plant in Belmond.

Company officials announced 78 workers, or 1/5 of the company's work force, will be laid off.

The company says it because of a drop in demand for its products.  Eaton makes engine machine valves.  The layoffs will take place at the end of January.

Jim parks, Communications Manager for the Ohio-based company, says a decline in customer orders is the reason for the layoffs, adding that they are part of a company-wide reduction in labor.

Belmond City Manager Lee Ann Waltzing says the cutbacks at Eaton, one of the community's top three employers, are "a blow" to the city and its residents.
