IC man who drove into Mississippi River drowned

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- An autopsy report released Thursday shows an Iowa City man who was wanted for a domestic assault drowned after he drove his sport utility vehicle into the Mississippi River at LeClaire.

Michael Hodges died after he drove his SUV into the river on December 28th when a state trooper tried to approach him.

Iowa City police said they were looking for the 51-year-old in connection with a serious domestic assault against his wife. They say Hodges told his wife he intended to kill himself and sent text messages to others also threatening suicide.

Police say they were able to track Hodges' cell phone to LeClaire.

It took emergency crews about three hours to pull his SUV from the river.
