MINNEAPOLIS (KWWL) -- Iowa native and Minnesota Twins owner Carl Pohlad is being remembered at his funeral as a hard-driving businessman and a dedicated family man.

Nearly 1,000 people attended the service Thursday at The Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis.

Among the mourners at Thursday's funeral are business leaders, politicians and Twins greats including Kent Hrbek, Tony Olivia, Paul Molitor and Bert Blyleven.

Pohlad's son Bob says his father was a complicated man who never forgot his humble roots. He says Carl Pohlad treasured his family above all else, but also loved the competitiveness of the business world and the recognition that came from owning the Twins.

Pohlad was born on August 23, 1915, to a poor Slovak family in Des Moines.  He grew up in West Des Moines and graduated from Valley High School in West Des Moines in 1934.

According to the Washington Post "Mr. Pohlad, who developed his thrifty ways while coming of age during the Great Depression, showed his business acumen early, making profits by organizing kids to pick weeds in an Iowa cornfield."

Pohlad died Monday at 93. The billionaire banker bought the Twins from Calvin Griffith in 1984 and saw the team win World Series titles in 1987 and 1991.
