Iowa drug czar wants to track sales to fight meth

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Iowa's drug czar announced a new plan to battle the state's problem with crystal meth.

Gary Kendall says he'll asked the Legislature to require Iowa pharmacies to participate in an electronic system to track sales of cold an allergy medicines containing pseudoephedrine.

A 2005 state law requiring the medicines to be sold only in pharmacies resulted in an 88% decline in meth lab seizures. Kendall says more action is needed.

A new federal report predicts a modest increase in domestic meth this year because of a reduction in the flow of the drug from Mexico.

Pharmacy groups are wary of the work involved in maintaining such a system, saying it could increase their workload.
