Trustee says bidding will be competitive for Agriprocessors

IOWA CITY (AP) -- An official overseeing a kosher slaughterhouse's bankruptcy case says potential buyers will undergo a competitive bidding process as the company tries to unload the embattled business.

The Chapter 11 Operating Trustee for Agriprocessors Inc. made the announcement regarding the Postville plant on Wednesday. Officials have said as many as a dozen potential buyers are interested in the slaughterhouse.

Trustee Joseph Sarachek says the company continues to reopen many of its production lines, ensuring its new owners will quickly be able to assume a "dominant position" in the kosher marketplace.

Once the nation's largest kosher slaughterhouse, Agriprocessors sought bankruptcy protection months after a May 12 immigration raid in Postville.
