Dubuque Ice Fest starts Saturday

Dubuque (KWWL) -- Ice Fest begins Saturday, January 10.  All events are at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium.

KWWL Storm Track 7 Meteorologist Jeff Kennedy will present a winter weather workshop on Sunday, January 25 at 2:00 p.m.

ICE FEST: Jan. 10, to Jan. 25, 2009
Ice Fest 2009 Daily Activities - Ice Harvesting Demonstrations, Ice Harvesting Film, Eagle Watching, Traditional Native American Snow Game, Ice-Safety Programs, and More! Sponsored by Grand Harbor Resort & Waterpark, the "official igloo of Ice Fest."

Jan. 10 & 11, 2009
Ice Fest kicks off with an appearance by Dubuque-native and Arctic Explorer Troy Henkels during Ice Fest's first weekend. Henkels will give multi-media presentations about his latest expedition to the Antarctic. Last year Henkels participated in the In the Wake of the Belgica sailing expedition with world-famous explorer Dixie Dansercoer, during which he became the first person ever to kite-surf inside the Antarctic Circle.

Troy Henkels will take questions, sign autographs, show photos and screen movie clips of In the Wake of the Belgica, a documentary film that follows the Belgica sailing expedition. The presentations will begin at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on both Jan. 10 & 11 in the Journey Theater. Seating is limited so plan to arrive early.

And special display just inside the Museum & Aquarium main entrance will share Henkels' modern polar exploration equipment including his kite-surfing sail, a specialized dry-suit and his climbing/mountaineering gear.

Jan. 17 & 18, 2009
Saturday, Jan. 17:
  • The Dubuque Thunderbirds hockey team will be available for autographs and photos and will teach children how to hit the perfect slap shot from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Bald Eagle viewing with free trolley rides to viewing areas.
Sunday, Jan. 18:
  • The Museum & Aquarium welcomes Iowa Public Television's Kids Clubhouse host, Dan Wordell. Wordell will host a family reading time presentation at 2 p.m. Popular children's story book and cartoon character Curious George will also make an appearance.

Jan. 24 & 25, 2009
Saturday, Jan. 24:
  • Features the CASI-sanctioned "Chill Out Chili Cook-Off." Professional chili masters will start cooking at 12 p.m. and the public tasting will begin at 4 p.m. Beer, wine and cheese will also be served at the cook-off tasting.
  • The Dubuque Fire & Rescue Department will demonstrate open water rescue techniques at 1 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 25:
  • KWWL TV Meteorologist Jeff Kennedy will present a winter-weather workshop at 2 p.m.
