Eye care for low-income vets

Linn County (KWWL) - Low-income veterans living in Linn County will now have access to eye exams and eye glasses thanks to a $6,150 grant from the Iowa Department of Veteran Affairs.

"We expect to serve 70 veterans with this grant," said Donald Tyne, Linn County Veteran Affairs Director. "These are men and women who likely would have to go without vision exams or glasses if it were not for this grant program. We are grateful to the Iowa Department of Veteran Affairs for making this grant possible."

The county will work cooperatively with Lens Crafters to implement the program.

"This state grant is a great example of governments working together to meet the needs of citizens," said Lu Barron, Chair of the Linn County Board of Supervisors.

More than 20,000 veterans live in Linn County. In fiscal year 2008, Linn County Veteran Affairs served more than 4,100 veterans.
