Radon Month - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings

Radon Month

Radon, a gas you can't see or taste, kills hundreds of Iowans each year.  The Iowa Department of Public Health has proclaimed January as radon action month.  Public Health estimates up to 70-percent of Iowa homes have elevated radon, a radioactive gas found in soil.  The gas gets into buildings through cracks or holes in the foundation.  The only way to know if radon present is to test for it.  You can purchase a test kit by calling the "Iowa Air Coalition of Public Health" at 1-800-206-7818.  Hardware stores sell radon tests for about 10 dollars.  Health officials recommend testing in the winter when radon levels are high.
