Products to help you stay upright, when it gets downright icy

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - When rock salt and bags of sand can't handle inches of caked ice, what do you do?

There are some products you can find to help keep you on your feet in places like Iowa City, where some parking lots, alleys and sidewalks are still slick to the sole.

For walkers and runners, there are several varieties of grips that attach to the bottom of nearly any shoe, for $15 to $30 dollars. You can find them in sporting goods stores like Active Endeavors, Wilson's Sportscenter or Scheels, where they've been flying off the shelves.

Floor Manager Gordon Dean showed us one variety, called "Yaktrax."

"This has been one of our best-sellers this season. With the weather the way it's been, even back in November and especially through December, it's been an extremely good seller for us."

Another option is to purchase shoes with a more aggressive tread. If you're a bike rider, most bike shops offer studded tires, which range from $60 to $130 a piece.

These methods make for better traction overall, but retailers warn that no product will absolutely guarantee that it will prevent a fall, and that you should still be careful when taking to the ice.
