Hot demand for ice melts

WATERLOO (KWWL) The weather is cold and there's a "hot" demand for ice melts.

Waterloo Menards Manager Brian Sampson expects to sell more than 40,000 pounds of ice melt during the winter.

The most popular de-icer at Menards is "End Ice." It's less expensive and still works in temperatures ten degrees below zero.

More expensive, but for colder temperatures and less concrete staining, there's "Path Maker" and "Heat."

Sampson said "Heat" is good for really cold temps, more than 30 degrees below zero.

BrianSampson said most de-icers have instructions on the back about how much you should use. He said it's best to spread it as evenly as possible and moderation is key.

"They all recommend if your concrete is newer than a year, then it's really important to use it in moderation," said Sampson.

If your sidewalk, driveway or steps are slick and you need a quick fix, Sampson said try sand or kitty litter.

"That isn't gonna help melt it off, but it is gonna give you some traction. If you've got a water softener at home you're using rock salt in there, if you have to, you can dig some of that salt out and throw it on the ice," he said.

For pet owners...

"I've got this pet safe K-9. It won't hurt their paws," said Sampson.

Sampson said most ice melts work well, but to avoid re-freezing, be sure to scrap away loose ice once the ice melt does its job.
