Manure spill reaches Crane Creek tributary

BREMER COUNTY (KWWL) -- There are no reports yet of a fish kill, but KWWL-TV News has learned that dairy manure from Denver Dairy has reached a tributary of Crane Creek, in Bremer County.

The manure has been discovered southeast of Denver, and about twelve miles north of Waterloo  The DNR, The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has launched an investigation, saying an unknown amount of dairy manure has reached an underground tile line, which flows into the Crane Creek tributary.

According to the Environmental Services Division of the DNR, Denver Dairy producers discovered the manure release when they began their work day, around 5 AM on New Year's Day. At that time, Denver Dairy producers plugged a pipe between the milking parlor and an earthen storage basin, and reported no manure had reached the stream. Further investigation has since found that the manure has reached the Crane Creek tributary.

The DNR says it will release a notice of violation against Denver Dairy, for allegedly not reporting the manure spill within six hours of its discovery or occurence.
