Dubuque lawyer charged with violating protection order

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- A Dubuque attorney accused of holding his common-law wife prisoner and beating her has now been charged with violating a protection order for allegedly calling the woman 17 times from jail.

James Axt, 56 is charged with 17 counts of violating a protection order after jail staff discovered he called the alleged victim's cell phone 17 times between December 20th and Christmas Day.

Prosecutors charged Axt in November with domestic assault with intent to inflict serious injury and false imprisonment.

Court documents show the woman was allegedly held for two weeks in the couple's Dubuque home and suffered large bruises on her legs, two black eyes, a broken nose and broken ribs.
