Top archers from across the country compete in Dubuque

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- The best archers in the country are in Dubuque this weekend in hopes of qualifying for the U.S. Team.

The 2009 World Indoor Team trials for U.S.A. Archery are being held at the University of Dubuque.  88 of the top archers are competing for 24 spots on the team.

Two of the competitors took part in the Beijing Olympics.  Dubuque city officials say they like to attract big sporting events during winter months when the city's tourism generally slows down.

"They have to come to Dubuque to participate in this, so they're going to come here. A lot of these competitors are staying anywhere from three to four nights in a hotel. They're going to be eating at the restaurants, going to the attractions and such," said Keith Rahe with the Dubuque Sports Commission.

The 24 team members will be announced after competition wraps up Sunday night.  Team U.S.A. will go to the world championship in Poland in march.
